Schools are not allowed to teach values because that is the job of the parents. Yet behaviors of 11 year olds are well known by adults and other students without danger of consequences. It is no surprise that std's are pandemic in some communities and still, the bible thumping, holier-than-thou, right-wing zealots scream against abortion while silent towards that which leads to unwanted pregnancy.
I heard her on the radio driving back home. I found her on YouTube. I have known this for years and finally someone is going public about it. My friend here in Alabama is having problems finding her granddaughter clothing that isn't revealing and sexy. She is only 11.

I love this author and have read several of her books. She is a scholar and I like that she is thorough. The wars in Iraq and the new militant islamist extremist are often a war of old morals versus new morals. In the book she talks about female genital mutilation that takes place to this day with the approving eyes of the older women who also endured it. When women wear the veil they try to protect themselves from the "primitive" men of that culture. I believe that. Our society including the military, and religious groups, seem to protect male "privilege" and have no idea of what that is. Women go out and work and support their spouses and families and work for lower wages. If they work in a traditionally male occupation they must prove themselves in ways that men never have to. If men work in a traditionally female occupation, you'll notice it. We have been in a recession for 20 months and I wonder how many women have been passed over for the few positions remaining simply because they are 'older' 'females'. How do you tell young women to work towards change and use power to advance themselves but not take on the traditional female role? I am re-reading this book in light of the world today.
